Firstly, we need to understand the basic structure and functions of each part of the self-adhesive material as a printing material. The structure of the adhesive consists of the facing material, the adhesive, and the backing paper. From the perspective of manufacturing process and quality assurance, the adhesive is composed of seven parts:
1. Back coating or back printing
Back coating is to apply a protective coating on the back of the backing paper to prevent waste from escaping, and the adhesive around the rewinding label adheres to the backing paper. Another function is to create multi-layer labels. Back printing is to print the registered trademark and patterns of the manufacturer on the back of the backing paper, serving as an advertising and anti-counterfeiting function.
2. Surface coating
It is used to modify the surface properties of the material. It increases surface tension, color change, adds a protective layer, etc., making it easier to absorb ink, easier to print, resistant to stains, increasing the adhesion of the ink, preventing the printing graphics from falling off. Surface coating is mainly used for non-hygroscopic materials such as aluminum foil, coated paper, various films, etc.
3. Facing material
The facing material is a kind of material that can receive printed graphics on the front and adhesive on the back, and be applied to the final attached object.
Generally speaking, any deformable material that can be bent, such as commonly used paper, film, composite foil, various fabrics, thin metal sheets, rubber, etc., can be used as the fabric of self-adhesive materials. The type of facing material depends on the final application and printing process. The facing material must be compatible with printing printing, have good ink absorption, and be strong enough to withstand various processes such as die-cutting, water extraction, slitting, die-cutting, labeling, etc.
4. Adhesive
The adhesive is the medium, serving as the connection between the label material and the adhesive base material. According to their characteristics, they are divided into two types: long-term type and detachable type. Different formulas are suitable for different surfaces and different occasions. The adhesive is a key component of self-adhesive material technology and also a key component of label application technology.
5. Release coating (silicone coating) is to apply a layer of silicone oil on the surface of the backing paper. It can prevent the adhesive from sticking to the backing paper.
6. Backing paper The role of the backing paper is to receive the release agent coating, protect the adhesive on the back of the surface layer, support the surface layer, so that it can be die-cut, waste discharge, and be labeled on the labeling machine.
7. Primer The primer is the same as the surface coating, but it is applied on the back of the surface material. The main purpose of the primer is:
(1) To prevent the surface material from being penetrated by the protective adhesive.
(2) To increase the opacity of the fabric.
(3) To increase the bonding strength between the adhesive and the surface layer material.
(4) To prevent the plastic surface material from allowing plasticizers to penetrate into the adhesive. This will affect the adhesion performance and cause the label's cohesion strength to decrease and the label to fall off.
